If you are an actor or dancer or other performer, whether established or entering into the business, you need to create your reel or video book. This must be updated to reflect your most recent work as a performer.

If you're just starting, you may not have material for your reel and need to create it.

The reel

Your reel is a short video presenting clips of previous work presenting different roles or styles you master. As you build your career with new jobs your reel should be updated to present your resent work. It should be no longer than 3 minutes, usually a DVD format, but increasingly performers publish their reel on their web page.

You may consider combining your reel with a book or composite, using the composite to direct potential producers to your webpage and reel.

Promoting yourself

Your reel should be online as well as ready to be sent on DVD. The video can be hosted on one of the various video streaming sites such youtube or vimeo. Make sure to clear the rights for any music or sound track you use for the video.

You may create a web site including your reel, photos and other relevant data such as references to previous work.

In all cases, whereever you promote yourself you should take care to promote yourself for the kind of job you're looking for.
