Day 5: Manu river to Tambo Blanquillo lodge

Posted: .

I had proposed a early morning walk to see and hear the forest wake up, but this request was denied by the guide. I could take a walk alone if I wanted to. Also, no support for the getting up early part. So I did. I left the lodge at 4.30 to walk one of the routes I knew and explore from there.

I didn't have much luck spotting any monkeys although I heard they got active, but I did spot a poison dart frog, in fact two. The first disappeared under some leaves before I had the camera ready. The second jumped fast, just as I was about to get the photo. Eventually it also disappeared under the leaves, and while I tried to uncover it, I didn't find it. Both were spotted close to Sandoval lake. I was back in the camp for breakfast at 7.

After breakfast we had 5 hours going downstream ahead. Again, we spotted a jaguar on the beach on the left side of the river. It was hidden in high vegetation, but somehow easier to see than the first one. Further down the river we saw a black caiman. We stopped in Boca Manu before arriving at Tambo Blanquillo lodge.

In the afternoon we went to a lake in a private reserve near the lodge, going out on a catemeran. This was a birdwathers paradise, for us mere mortals it was ... well birds. I lost count of the number of species we saw, and forgot the names of most of them.
