The Inka Trail to Machu Picchu is a classic, and even though alternative routes exist, the classic trail will remain classic. The classic route have become highly regulated requireing booking far in advance. The good thing is that the cuality of service has been highly improved. There is no longer a need to rush to get the best spot to camp, food is plenty, equipment good, and guides know their stuff. All you have to do is to walk and enjoy the tour.

I decided to go with Peru Treks relying on the recomendations from Lonely Planet and other travelers. Peru Treks is recommended and respected for paying porters and guides decent salary and suporting the local community. The price with Peru Treks was 450 USD, everything included, except water on the first, second and last day.

With the only glitch being the bus breaking down on the way out, the service was excelent and the tour well organized. The cook impressed with his skills, given the conditions food was great and plenty. There is room for improvement though. No water was served with the meals, they argue that they will not provide water as long as you can buy from locals along the way.
