Climbing Misti

Arequipa is right by the foot of the volcano Misti, rising 5822 meters above sealevel. It is a relatively easy and non technical trek, in fact the main challenge is the altitude. The usual trek is two days, first day going to basecamp in around 4500m, then very early the secnod day, in fact by night, ascending to the top. The ascend from basecamp is some 6 hours while going down is fun and fast as you run in the volcanic dust, one and a half hour back to base camp, and another one and a half to the pick up point.

Tour operator
Lots of tour operators in Arequipa offer a two day trek climbing the volcano Misti. Many organize with another agency making things less transparent and lack of regulation means that some hire guides with out adequate qualifications.
I went with Arcadio Mamani Viza (calle Jerusalen 400 AB2 Cercado). He is registered with UIAGM and his office was the only one where I met the guide and saw his official ID laid under the glass desk. His english is basic but sufficient.
